Health Coaching has become kind of a buzz word these days, but what does it mean? Progressive Health Center’s Integrative Care Director Kim Oliva describes Health Coaching a bit like problem solving. “You sit down with someone who compassionately listens and helps you identify what barriers or challenges you might have in making a lifestyle change, and then inquisitively helps you come up with solutions or strategies to deal with specific obstacles.”
“Health Coaching is a starting place to begin the process of lasting change,” says Oliva. “I always remind clients that you have to begin somewhere.”
Health Coaching may begin with identifying attitudes or beliefs about the problem, and then reviewing new or different approaches. Oliva says, “It’s helpful when clients approach a coaching session with an open mind and flexibility. It’s not about fixing all of your problems in one session, rather it’s about understanding that some habits may have taken a long time to form and being patient with the process of unbundling the problems.”
Making lifestyle changes is a process, one that’s filled with obstacles and setbacks. Health Coaching can help you navigate the process with a supportive mentor who is genuinely interested in helping you achieve your goals.
